Is Coaching Right For You?

In order to know if coaching is right for you, you need to understand what is coaching.

Many times I read to people explain what is coaching in a very technical approach, whereas my visions about coaching is very simple: coaching is about learning with a trusted advisor (your coach).

While in training you get a full course and is focused on a learning transaction, in coaching you get the inspiration and tools so that you can learn the lessons by yourself and is focused on a learning based on trust.

As in coaching you learn to learn, therefore your potential is limitless.

Finally, coaching inspires to you to action!

I really like two definitions of coaching: ICF and Wikipedia. Following you can read both:

ICF’s Definition of Coaching

The official ICF (International Coaching Federation) definition of coaching is “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

To put it simply, a coach is a person who is partnering with a client to help them come up with a reasonable plan of action when it comes to fulfilling a set of personal and/or professional goals.

Wikipedia’s Definition of Definition

Coaching is a form of development in which a person called a coach supports a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal by providing training, advice and guidance. The learner is sometimes called a coachee.

Occasionally, coaching may mean an informal relationship between two people, of whom one has more experience and expertise than the other and offers advice and guidance as the latter learns; but coaching differs from mentoring in focusing on specific tasks or objectives, as opposed to general goals or overall development.

The first use of the term “coach” in connection with an instructor or trainer arose around 1830 in Oxford University slang for a tutor who “carried” a student through an exam. The word “coaching” thus identified a process used to transport people from where they are to where they want to be. The first use of the term in relation to sports came in 1861.
